New subscription to JISC MediaHub

We now subscribe to JISC MediaHub a single point of access to three major multimedia archives purchased on behalf of JISC Collections. Access is from http://jiscmediahub.ac.uk/ which will prompt for institutional login, and it is listed in our catalogue and (soon) our A-Z list of databases powered by LibGuides. Content in JISC MediaHub cannot be found via Discover.

JISC MediaHubenables cross-searching and exploration of TV news, documentary films, still images and classical music from the following archives:

Digital Images for Education
The result of a significant procurement during 2009-10, this archive comprises over 56,000 images and 600 hours of film selected by the education community to capture world, UK and local events during the last 25 years. Sources include the AP Archive, Getty Images, ITN, Design Council Archives, Imperial War Museum, Royal Geographical Society, and PYMCA.

NewsFilm Online
Over 3,000 hours of digitised news stories from the ITN/Reuters archives, comprising some 60,000 stories. The sources include the complete Gaumont and Paramount newsreels, from 1910 and 1934 respectively. Previously unbroadcast and unseen material, such as rushes and programme scripts, are also included.

Film & Sound Online
Over 2,000 items, comprising 17 separate collections of digitised film and sound, including Imperial War Museum film footage, and scientific content from the Wellcome Library and the Biochemical Society. The archive also includes over 50 hours of classical music recording from the Culverhouse collection.

JISC MediaHub also enables users to search and link out to external media collections such as the Open Video Project, Wellcome Images, ADS, ARKive and the First World War Poetry Archive.

Rock's Backpages - full-text music magazines now available

We now subscribe to Rock's Backpages - the biggest online database of rock music writing in the world. Sourced from the pages of the music and mainstream press, it is a massive library of articles (reviews, interviews, features and more) from the early 1960s up to the present day. There are nearly 20,000 articles on the site and around 300 audio interviews. They feature over 2,500 artists and range from 500-word album (or concert) reviews to 10,000-word interviews and features. The articles are full text and fully searchable (by artist, date, genre, keyword etc.). They are taken from the widest possible range of publications in the US and UK including Rolling Stone, NME, Melody Maker and MOJO. The library includes previously unpublished pieces about The Beatles (by Michael Lydon in 1966), The Doors (by Lester Bangs in 1975), and seminal interviews with major artists from Bob Dylan to Radiohead. The library is currently increasing in size by approximately 50 new articles a week.

We have sacrificed Music Index to fund the subscription to Rock's Backpages. Academic music journals are better covered by RILM, and while Music Index indexed lots of popular music magazines we decided it was better to pay for full-text access to them in Rock's Backpages.

Struggling to get hold of textbooks?

Introducing Reference Tree - a service that lets students rent e-book chapters or whole e-books.

The Library strives to make sure that we have at least one copy of every item on a reading list, and multiple copies of core texts. Furthermore we monitor borrowing statistics and buy additional copies to meet demand.

However, we recognize that at times of peak demand it can be hard to obtain the textbooks you need. It can also be hard for us to provide key texts as e-books:

• Sometimes publishers will only sell e-textbooks to students, not to libraries

• Sometimes e-textbooks are only sold to libraries at prices that we can’t afford (on the assumption that sales of print copies to students will diminish)

• Sometimes the e-textbooks that are sold to libraries have limits on the number of students who can use them at one, so they are not available just when you need them most

• Sometimes all the print copies are out on loan and your need is too urgent to wait for a copy to be returned

You now have the option of renting chapters or whole books, for 6 or 12 months, at your own expense through Reference Tree. There is no obligation or expectation on you to do so, but we think you might find it a useful option.

To rent chapters or books from Reference Tree you need to:

• Go to Reference Tree http://www.reference-tree.com/ (opens in a new window)

• Register, and identify yourself as a member of the University of Liverpool during the registration process

• Before renting any content we strongly advise you to click the University of Liverpool icon on Reference Tree pages which will link you to a title search on the library catalogue. Check thoroughly to see if there is a no-cost option that meets your needs. The Library cannot be held responsible for costs you incur if you choose to licence content from Reference Tree.

These details appear at http://www.liv.ac.uk/library/e-library/referencetree.html, linked from the bottom of our e-books page.

We are only subscribing to new titles where usage statistics show that a reasonable number of abstracts have been viewed, suggesting that there is demand for these titles.

Borrowing books over Christmas

The Library remains open during the Christmas vacation (see opening hours) and the loan procedure remains unchanged throughout this period.

This means that books will incur fines if they are not renewed or returned by the due date.

  • - You can use the 24/7 telephone renewal line: 0151-794-5010

You are allowed 12 renewals on 14-day and 7-day loan items and 6 renewals on 3-day loan items. Once this limit has been reached you need to return the books to the Library, remove them from your record and start the loan process afresh. You cannot take them out again or renew them if they have been requested by another user.

A requested book can be posted back to the Library. Please ensure that you obtain receipt of postage. Postal address:

21 recent years added to The Times Digital Archive

The Times Digital Archive now covers 1785-2006. Previously it only covered up until 1985. It has also been given a much needed new interface with powerful new search options and a much cleaner look, bringing it into line with our other Gale newspaper archives: the Economist, FT, Illustrated London News, Picture Post and TLS, as well as our collections of 17-19th century UK and US newspaper archives.

Links to the Times Digital Archive have not changed. You can access it via its catalogue record, via our A-Z Databases list in LibGuides, or via or e-Newspapers page and its associated Digitized Newspapers LibGuide.

Alternatively you can search all Gale digitized newspapers archives together at the Gale NewsVault.

Incidentally, the BL British Newspaper Archive that was launched this week contains some of the digitised newspapers that we have (that JISC digitised for the BL) and in time it will contain all of those, but it also contains many more newspapers digitised by brightsolid. The site is free to search but individuals have to pay to view full-text, much like other family history websites such as ancestry.co.uk.

If you want to view full-text and don’t want to pay then you have to travel to the BL to access it from the British Library reading rooms! We are told that JISC will be in negotiation with the British Library about gaining access to the new content.
