Major purchase of CUP ebooks

We are delighted to announce that we have purchased all Cambridge University Press e-books published between 2005 and 2010, and prior to 1993 - some 4,732 titles in all. Furthermore, we will purchase their 2011 and 2012 lists too.

The titles include scholarly monographs and contributed volumes for which CUP have electronic rights, but not textbooks. By early 2011 CUP plan to make new e-books available on the platform at the same time that the printed book becomes available.

The Cambridge Books Online site has no restriction on the number of simultaneous users who can access it, and its e-books are presented as simple PDF files that we know readers prefer. Each chapter has been assigned it own DOI (Digital Object Identifier). This allows you to build a stable link to any chapter, which will work off-campus too, by just adding the chapter's DOI to the end of this URL:

Catalogue records will be uploaded shortly but in the meantime you can
search Cambridge Books Online or browse by subject:

Off-campus access is available via EZproxy as usual.

We are delighted to announce that after a successful trial, the library has purchased The Illustrated London News Historical Archive,1842-2003.

With its debut in 1842 the Illustrated London News became the world's first illustrated weekly newspaper, sparking a revolution in journalism and news reporting. The publication presented a vivid picture of British and world events - including news of war, disasters, royalty, social affairs, the arts and science. Containing over 260,000 full colour pages, fully searchable and browseable, the ILN Historical Archive 1842-2003 provides unprecedented access to the entire run of this unique historical record.

Following our succesful trial of the Daily Express Archive, which yielded several positive comments, and higher usage than the Daily Mirror Archive to which we already subscribe on the same platform, we are delighted to announce that we have now purchased the Daily Express Archive in perpetuity.

Access is available now at
UKPressOnline and a catalogue record has been created. The Daily Express Archive can be searched together with the Daily Mirror Archive, or on its own. Off-campus access is provided through EZproxy as usual.

Note that we currently have trial access to the Sunday Express, Daily Star, Star on Sunday and Watchman but access to these will expire soon.

IEEE-Wiley e-books purchased

We have purchased a collection of nearly 400 e-book co-published by the IEEE and Wiley on the IEEE Xplore platform.

The collection includes some titles from as far back as 1984 but about 75% are from 2000 and later. IEEE Xplore presents its e-books as simple PDF chapters which we know readers prefer.

Up to 25 users can now access the IEEE Xplore platform at once (whether for books, journals, conference proceedings, or standards), a considerable improvement on our previous level of 15.

Catalogue records for each book will be supplied shortly, but in the meantime access is already available (incuding off-campus access via EZproxy) and you can:

The IEEE-Wiley e-book collection complements the
SPIE e-book collection that we now include in our subscription to the SPIE Digital Library.

25 CRCnetBASE Engineering e-books purchased

We have purchased 25 core Engineering e-books from CRC Press (the science and technology book division of Taylor & Francis) on their CRCnetBASE platform.

CRCnetBASE presents its chapters as simple PDFs which we know readers prefer. The PDFs are surrounded by lots of other page elements though, which makes the books difficult to read on-screen. We suggest you either:

  1. Download the PDF (using the icon in Acrobat) and then open in Acrobat to read comfortably on screen
  2. Change your Acrobat settings so that PDFs are always opened in a new window. In Acrobat: Edit, Preferences..., Internet, untick Display PDF in browser.
Catalogue records will be available for each book soon, but in the meantime here are the links to the books that we have purchased (with off-campus access via EZproxy as usual):

TRIAL: Medical e-textbooks from Elsevier

We have a trial of medical e-textbooks from Elsevier (Mosby, Churchill-Livingstone etc) until the end of August. These include really core titles like Kumar & Clark and Gray's Anatomy. The sort of e-textbooks that haven't previously been sold to libraries but only to individuals.

To access this trial go to: Ignore the login boxes to the left. Access is provided by IP recognition, not username and password.

For off-campus access, login to Apps Anywhere and launch Internet Explorer from its Web or Office folder, and then access the trial using that instance of Internet Explorer. If we subscribe we’ll setup off-campus access through EZproxy of course.

There is an FAQ about how to read, copy and print at

Subscriptions aren't cheap so we would only be able to afford to subscribe to a few titles. Before committing to that we want to be sure that you find these titles convenient to use online. So after trialling these e-textbooks please leave your comments below. You can choose the anonymous option to comment without needing to have a Blogger account, but it helps if you include your name in your feedback so that we can follow up on comments.

Irish Newspaper Archives now available

Following the unprecedented number of comments in response to our extended trial, we have now purchased 15 years' access to Irish Newspaper Archives. Access is now available from or through our e-Newspapers or Historical Collections online pages. Catalogue records for the individual newspapers within Irish Newspaper Archives will be available soon.

The Irish Newspaper Archive contains over 6 million pages in over 500,000 issues of Irish Newspaper publications. With national daily editions such as the Irish Independent, regional weekly editions including the Connacht Tribune, Kerryman and Anglo-Celt and out of print publications such as the Freeman's Journal and The Nation. Spanning back as far as 1763 with issues been converted from microfilm and running right up to current date where more recent issues are presented in full color. The contents of all issues are fully text searchable and reflect the full context and layout of each page.

This year the full archives of the Irish Press will be added to the site and seven Northern Irish titles are in the process of being uploaded. In the future, significant historical titles such as the Butte Independent and An Gael from the States will be added.
